World Cup: Group G Preview

Brazil is the favorite to win Group G, but winning it will not be easy, as in this World Cup this is the Group of Death.

Brazil (-222) has the best odds to win Group G and they recently overtook Spain as FIFA’s top-ranked team. It is interesting that Group G is the group of death since North Korea is the lowest ranked team by FIFA playing in South Africa.

The only five-time winner of the World Cup is again a great team and it is a fact that they have never lost on African solid (8-0). Brazil’s set pieces and fast counter-attacks are their strengths and they have one of the best midfielders in the world in Kaka of Real Madrid.

The defense is solid anchored by Inter Milan G Julio Cesar, but the main weakness of the Brazilians is they tend to struggle against teams that drop back and pack the defense, which many teams will do against them.

Portugal (+350) did not qualify easily, but the 2006 semifinalist came on strong late and still have one of the best scoring threats in the world in Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, the strength of the Portuguese is their strong defense led by the tandem of Bruno Alves and Ricardo Carvalho. Even though they have Ronaldo in the midfield Portugal does not have the best strikers in the world and offense will be a problem.

Portugal has to rely on the midfielders to score and take advantage of counter-attacks.

The Ivory Coast (+400) may not be the highest FIFA ranked team in Africa, but they may be the best and they also have one of the best strikers in the world in Didier Drogba of Chelsea.

The Ivory Coast strength is their solid offense led by Drogba and the other world class players of Salomon Kalou, Gervinho, Boubacar Sanogo, Aruna Dindane, and Amara Diane.

Kolo Toure of Manchester City is the team leader and will have to keep all the egos on the squad in check. That is their main weakness is all the egos, as there have been inter-squad fights, which always kills team chemistry.

North Korea (+1000) is the major underdog in Group G and it is a long shot they will not only win the group, but also even make it out. This is their first appearance in the World Cup since 1966 and the strength of their team is their solid defense and they only gave up seven goals in 16 World Cup qualifying matches. Even though South Korea does have strikers Jong Tae-se Kawasaki Frontale and Hong Yong Jo FC Rostov their offense is not a high-scoring one and most of the players on the team do not play in top-flight international clubs.
