World Cup Group A Preview

Group Stage A is not an easy group with three teams that FIFA has ranked in the top 20 and the host nation South Africa.

France is the clear-cut favorites to win this group posted at -125. However, they did not look good in cup qualifying and barely made it into the World Cup after a Thierry Henry infamous handball in their last match against Ireland.

The French have a solid offense with the world-class players of Franck Ribery Nicolas Anelka, and Henry, but their main concern is their central defense. Their matches against Mexico and Uruguay will be tough ones, as each has a solid team.

Mexico is at +350 to win the group and while they do have a solid midfield and a decent defense this team really lacks firepower, especially up front. Barcelona defender Rafael Márquez may be the key to their squad, as Mexico may have to win games with their defense since they are not a high-scoring team.

Uruguay is at +400 and they barely qualified for the World Cup after beating Costa Rica in a playoff. They are one of the hardest working squads in the competition and they have a very strong defense. Atletico Madrid’s Diego Forlán and FC Porto’s Cristian Rodríguez can score, but Uruguay is an inconsistent and unpredictable team, especially on offense, and they need to be consistent and that is even more the case in the matches against Mexico and France.

South Africa is the big underdog in the group at +600 and even though they are the host country and will have a big home field advantage it is a major long-shot that they will make it out of Group A. South Africa has a solid defense and good goalie play, but their offense is their major weakness. They have not scored in their last two matches and really have struggled on offense since the Confederations Cup last June. For South Africa to make it out of this group Benni McCarthy of Blackburn and Bernard Parker of FC Twente have to score some goals for the hosts.

The opening matches are big in this group, as they may set the stage for how this group plays out. The opening matches are South Africa vs. Mexico and Uruguay vs. France, which are the first two matches of the World Cup.

Here are the odds to win the Group Stage A at Bovada as of May 4th.
