The Dutch will be a little shorthanded in this match, as DF Gregory van der Wiel and MF Nigel de Jong are both suspended for this match. Speaking of shorthanded Uruguay is worse off, as they will be without suspended striker Luis Suarez and DF Jorge Fucile. They will also be without the injured MF Nicolas Lodeiro and captain Diego Lugano and DF Diego Godin are both banged up and may not play.
Luis Suarez will be a huge loss for Uruguay and their goal leader for the World Cup Diego Forlán (3 goals) and Edinson Cavani will have to be the main guys up front. Suarez scored twice in Uruguay’s round of 16 win over South Korea and he will be missed.
Uruguay will have to play great defense against the Dutch duo of Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben, who are playing great, especially in Holland’s playoff wins.
MF Mark Van Bommel will have to play well and break up the Uruguay attack, but it will not be easy in this match, especially since MF Nigel de Jong is suspended and will not play.
With left back Jorge Fucile suspended Alvaro Pereira will likely be given the task of marking Arjen Robben, who is in sparkling form for the Dutch since coming back from injury.
Uruguay has not won a match against a European team in their last 13 World Cup matches (six draws, seven losses) with their last win over a European side coming in 1970 when they beat the Soviet Union 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
In an interesting fact New Zealand could finish as the only unbeaten squad at the 2010 World Cup (3 draws) if Holland or Uruguay lose in the finals.
Both teams have a few starters out, but the losses will hurt Uruguay more. The Dutch are coming off a huge win over Brazil in the quarterfinals and they will be confident heading into this match. Holland will win, as their offense is too much for Uruguay to handle.
