World Cup South Korea Preview

South Korea is the major underdog out of Group B and while they do have a couple of solid strikers their defense is a concern AND they are in a tough group.

South Korea did not get lucky to get in a weak group, as they have to face Argentina, Greece, and Nigeria.
Bovada has South Korea at +20000 to win the World Cup and at +1100 to win Group B.

South Korea has no easy matches in their group, as Argentina is stacked and has a guy names Lionel Messi, Greece is ranked 12th in the world according to FIFA, and Nigeria is ranked in the top 20 in the world and have a great offense.

South Korea has made the World Cup seven times and were the Cinderella of the tournament when they were the host in 2002 reaching the semifinals.

The South Koreans did not start off qualifying for this World Cup well, but they won four of their last qualifying matches to book their ticket to South Africa.

The main strength of the South Korean squad is their team chemistry and they are a very well coached and hard working squad. They are a diligent squad that has to play well together, as they lack many world-class players. Park Ji-Sung of Manchester United and Park Chu-Young of AS Monaco are solid up front, but they will have trouble getting the ball with the midfielders they have. One player that has a lot of pressure on him is 21-year old MF Lee Chung-Yong of Bolton, as he is a good midfielder with a good cross and will have to set up the strikers for South Korea to have any chance to make it out of Group B.

Korea’s main weakness is on defense, especially on set pieces since they are a smaller team. There is also a big drop-off in talent with the South Korean reserves and that is a concern in the hot and humid South African climate.

Head coach Huh Jung-Moo is a legendary player and he is very strict and stern and tends to rely on his defense, which is not his team’s strength.

The Red Devils will have a hard time getting out of this tough group and they will have to do well in their first match against Greece, as if they can win or even draw they will gain a ton of confidence heading into the last two matches.
