Starting pitcher handicapping tips
Friday night’s MLB deck is stacked with aces leaving MLB bettors with the choice to roll with the aces or go against them and hope they get cracked.
Just a few of the names on tap to pitch Friday night include Felix Hernandez, Cole Hamels, James Shields, Zack Greinke, Chris Carpenter, Roy Oswalt and Chad Billingsley. That’s an impressive list and there is a methodology in handicapping starting pitchers.
Mariners moneyline favorites
King Felix leads the Mariners against the Indians looking to improve on his 9-3 record and 2.53 ERA. He was dominant in his last start, holding the Rangers to one run on three hits over eight innings. Hernandez hasn’t lost since May 19 and since then the Mariners are 8-1 in his nine starts.
It’s no wonder the Mariners are a -155 road favorite in MLB lines at Bovada
Hamels ready to bounce back?
Hamels is in tough against Florida Friday night, as he tries to turn his season around after a rough first half. His last start wasn’t exactly promising though, as he was roughed up by the light-hitting Pirates for five runs on seven hits in six innings. In eight career starts against the Marlins Hamels is 2-4 with a 4.15 ERA. Despite his struggled the Phillies are still a -130 road favorite over at Bovada
Rays ace vs. Royalty
Shields and Greinke go head-to-head Friday night when Tampa Bay takes on Kansas City. Shields didn’t exactly light up the first half with a 6-6 record and a 3.42 ERA, but he was excellent against the Royals back in June when he allowed only two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in eight innings. What else is there to say about Greinke?
At 10-5 with a 2.12 ERA he’s the frontrunner for the AL Cy Young, but he’s had some trouble with the Rays in his career with a 0-2 record and 3.81 ERA in seven appearances.
The oddsmakers over at Bovada have baseball odds slightly favoring Tampa Bay at -115, while the total in this game is a low one, set at seven.
Carpenter looks to snakebite Arizona
Carpenter looks to build on a solid first half on Friday night versus the lame Diamondbacks. With Arizona sporting one of the worst record in baseball it’s no surprise the Cardinals are a huge -240 home favorite at Bovada Carpenter faced the D-Backs in April and tossed three shutout innings before a rib cage injured forced him to leave the game early. His counterpart, Arizona starter Jon Garland, is coming off a strong outing against the Cubs, but he was also lit up for seven runs by St. Louis in only 3 2-3 innings earlier this season.
Can Houston Oswalt over the Dodgers?
Finishing off the aces roundup is Oswalt versus Billingsley when the Astros clash with the Dodgers. Oswalt will need his best stuff to topple the MLB-best Dodgers, who enter this one as a -160 home favorite at Bovada Billingsley dominated the Astros earlier this season, tossing 7 1-3 shutout innings.
