Mariners top Jays in opener

The Seattle Mariners pounded out 13 hits and held on for a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series at Rogers Centre.

Seattle won the game as -155 favorites, and the nine runs made it OVER the posted over/under (7.5).

Franklin Gutierrez went 2-for-5 at the plate with a two-run homer for the Mariners. Felix Hernandez tossed eight innings for the win, striking out 11 batters along the way.

Vernon Wells belted a three-run homer and drove in all four runs for the Blue Jays. Jesse Carlson gave up two runs in relief and was tagged with the loss.
