Mountaineers vs Thundering Herd Final: 24-21 - Recap
Geno Smith sliced and diced the Thundering Herd defense for 316 yards as West Virginia handed Marshall a 24-21 defeat on Friday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
The Mountaineers won the battle on the scoreboard, but not at the payout window as they failed to cover the 12-point spread. UNDER bettors were rewarded when the final score pointed to an UNDER play.
Noel Devine rushed for 112 yards, while Ryan Clarke added 27 yards in the win. Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey added 85 and 72 receiving yards respectively.
Martin Ward rushed for 101 yards for Marshall, while Andre Booker added 29 yards. Brian Anderson threw for 229 yards for the Thundering Herd, while receivers Aaron Dobson and Lee Smith had 120 and 39 yards respectively.
Marshall was outgained by West Virginia 469-364 yards in Friday's match, while the important battle of first downs was won 28-16 by the Mountaineers.
The time of possession battle favored West Virginia as their offense was on the field for 33:45, longer than the 26:15 of their opponents.
Next game, West Virginia takes its act home to face Maryland looking for another win. For Marshall, they head on the road to face Bowling Green.
