Cards stop Padres in opener

Brendan Ryan belted a grand slam homer as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Diego Padres 5-1 Thursday night in the opener of a four-game set at Petco Park.

St. Louis won the game as -160 favorites, while the six runs went UNDER the posted over/under (7.5).

Yadier Molina drove in the other run for the Cardinals. Joel Pineiro tossed 7 2-3 innings for the win, giving up four hits and one run with seven strikeouts.

Kyle Blanks homered to drive in the lone run for the Padres. Tim Stauffer gave up four runs off four hits in five innings of work.
