Cardinals fend off Padres
The St. Louis Cardinals held off a late rally as they defeated the San Diego Padres 4-3 in the opener of a four-game series at Busch Stadium Thursday night.
St. Louis won the game as a -110 favorite, but the seven runs fell UNDER the posted over/under (7.5).
Troy Glaus hit two home runs, while Rick Ankiel and Joe Mather hit solo shots for the Cardinals. Kyle Lohse improved to 12-2 with the win, allowing two runs off seven hits over seven innings.
Edgar Gonzalez went 2-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run for the Padres. Jake Peavy gave up four runs off eight hits over seven innings to suffer the loss.
