Carpenter, Cardinals get past Nationals

Winning pitcher Chris Carpenter allowed only one earned run over eight innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Tuesday night.

St. Louis won as -260 home favorites, while the teams played UNDER the 7.5-run total posted by oddsmakers.

Felipe Lopez hit a two-run shot for the Cardinals, who also got a homer from Ryan Ludwick in the win.

Ian Desmond went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for Washington, while Tyler Clippard took the loss in relief of John Lannan for the Nationals.
