Minnesota knocks off Boilermakers in double OT
Gary Russell scored a on a three-yard run in double overtime to give the Minnesota Golden Gophers to a 42-35 win over the No. 11 Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Gophers were listed as 3.5-point favorites at home and made good on covering the spread. Thanks to overtime the combined score of 77 points went well over the posted total (56).
Russell finished the game with 75 yards, two touchdowns on the ground and a TD reception. Bryan Cupito threw for 272 yards, three touchdowns and was picked off three times in the win. Laurence Maroney rushed for 217 yards on 46 carries for Minnesota.
Brandon Kirsch threw for 245 yards while completing touchdown passes to Andre Chattams and Charles Davis in the loss. Kory Sheets rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries for Purdue.
