Mountaineers vs Thundering Herd Final: 34-13 - Recap
The battle between the Mountaineers and Thundering Herd didn’t turn out to be much of a battle at all as Marshall was handed a 34-13 defeat on Sunday at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium.
West Virginia did not, however, defeat the Thundering Herd against the spread, which closed at 21.5 at most sportsbooks. Totals bettors, meanwhile, saw the game go UNDER the closing number of 53.5.
Geno Smith completed 26 of 35 pass attempts for 249 yards for the Mountaineers in the win. He did not throw an interception in the game.
Tron Martinez rushed for 76 yards for Marshall, while Rakeem Cato added 3 yards. Rakeem Cato threw for 115 yards for the Thundering Herd, while receivers Antavious Wilson and Aaron Dobson had 64 and 22 yards respectively.
Marshall was outgained by West Virginia 291-187 yards in Sunday's match, while the important battle of first downs was won 17-9 by the Mountaineers.
The time of possession battle favored West Virginia as their offense was on the field for 24:51, longer than the 20:33 of their opponents.
