New York earned a 4-3 victory over Buffalo on Sunday, but needed a shootout to do it at First Niagara Center.
Bettors who backed the Islanders were rewarded as -125 favorites at sportsbooks. Over-Under bettors saw the total score go OVER the closing total of 5.5.
The win was clinched by Brock Nelson, who beat Connor Knapp in a shootout to gain the extra point in the standings for New York. New York got goals from Anders Lee (2) and Brock Nelson in the victory. Lee opened the scoring at 16:37 of the second period.
Anders Nilsson turned in a 36-save effort for the Islanders.
Matt Ellis, Torrey Mitchell, and Jamie McBain scored for the Sabres, finding the net behind Anders Nilsson.
Connor Knapp stopped 22 of 25 shots for the Sabres, but it wasn't enough to earn the victory.
On the power play, New York went 1-for-2, while the Sabres were 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
New York lost the shots on goal battle to Buffalo by a margin of 39-25.
