There were high hopes surrounding Philadelphia in 2011 and 2012, and those two years both ended in disappointment, especially last season’s ugly 4-12 SU and ATS record. Chip Kelly’s hiring has fans and bettors intrigued, but Philadelphia definitely comes into camp with lower expectations in 2013. If Kelly’s offensive schemes work at the pro level, Philadelphia should provide plenty of offense, OVER results, and wins this year. But if the injuries start piling up or pro defenses are able to solve the spread, it could be another disappointing season. Either way, it should be interesting to watch in the wide-open NFC East.

Philadelphia Eagles 2012-2013 Season Odds

Philadelphia just couldn't live up to the hype last season. After loading up in the offseason not only were the Eagles big NFC East favorites, but they were also among the favorites to win the Super Bowl. Instead they went 8-8 and missed the playoffs entirely.

Odds to win NFC East: +125
Regular Season Win Total: 10 (Over -110)
Props: NFL MVP Odds Michael Vick 12/1

If not for a four-game winning streak to end the season it could have been even worse for the Eagles. Philadelphia returns with most of the lineup they started last season with, but more importantly they're avoiding the massive hype.

On offense the one thing the Eagles need is a healthy Michael Vick. He missed three games last season and Philly lost two of them by a wide margin. Vick is still a big double threat and last season passed for 3303 yards with 18 touchdowns and rushed for another 589 yards. One other thing Vick needs to work on is turnovers, after turning the ball over 18 times last season.

When healthy the Eagles may have the best one-two receiving combo in the league in DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. Jackson posted 961 receiving yards and four touchdowns in what was considered a down year last season and he should be due for a huge bounce back season.

The Eagles' MVP last season was running back LeSean McCoy. In 15 games last season he rushed for 1309 yards on 273 carries with a league-leading 17 rushing touchdowns.

The Philadelphia defense, which was supposed to be unbeatable after adding Nnamdi Asomuga and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie last season was really good, but it was impossible for them to live up to the massive hype. The Eagles were the No. 8 defensive unit last season, allowing 324.9 yards per game. Not surprisingly they were better versus the pass than they were against the run.

The Eagles have all the talent need to finish atop the NFC East. What they really need if the Eagles team that finished the season 4-0 last year to show up much earlier this season.

Philadelphia Eagles 2011-2012 Season Odds Preview

Last year, Dallas was the chosen team in the NFC East and favored to represent the conference in the Super Bowl.

This year, the Philadelphia Eagles hope the same fate is not in store for them as they embark on a season of promise as a Super Bowl contender and prohibitive NFC East favorite.

Odds to Win NFC East: -140
Regular Season Win Total: Over 10.5 (-145)
Props: MVP Odds Michael Vick 17/2

After a key trade (Kevin Kolb to Arizona) brought Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round pick, they signed All Pro corner Nnamdi Asomugha, DE Cullen Jenkins, QB Vince Young, TE Donald Lee, WR Steve Smith, and others to go with the league’s most explosive offensive talent.

The defense is stouter, despite the loss of LB Stewart Bradley, and features the league’s best secondary by a wide margin. And on offense, every run or completed short pass could turn into seven points as the dynamic LeSean McCoy enters his second season as the featured back.

At wideout, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin provide the most electric WR combination in the NFL. Trusty Brent Celek is a favorite short-yardage and red-zone target and there is depth at all positions.

All of this fails to mention Michael Vick, the league’s thrilling pivot who is lethal with his arm and his legs. Small wonder they lead the NFC East odds by a wide margin when every offensive player is a major downfield threat.

But hype is one thing, as the much-hyped Cowboys of 2010 learned in plunging to a 6-10 mark (after a crippling 1-7 start). Dealing with the hype and proving it on the field is another thing.

The NFC East is also a tough proving ground. Dallas should be stronger. The New York Giants are always tough. The Washington Redskins can’t be worse than a year ago and have cleaned house on some unhappy and underperforming characters.
