Despite an outstanding performance from the defense last season, Pittsburgh was unable to overcome a rib injury to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and finished the season a disappointing 8-8 SU. The defense should continue to terrorize opposing offenses in 2013, so the pressure is on the offense to get Pittsburgh back to an elite level in the AFC. Assuming Roethlisberger can stay healthy and rookie running back Leveon Bell is as good as advertised, the Steelers have a great shot at winning the AFC North and going deep in the playoffs. But after last season, many are wondering how many more hits Roethlisberger can take.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2012-2013 Season Odds

The Pittsburgh Steelers made their usual trip to the playoffs last year, before their season was abruptly ended by the Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos. After a 12-4 season the Steelers claimed a Wild Card spot, but thanks to Tebow's overtime magic their playoff run was a short one.

Odds to win AFC North: +125
Regular Season Win Total:
Props: NFL MVP Odds Ben Roethlisberger 20/1

Backed by one of the top defenses in the NFL the Steelers remain one of the top teams in the AFC and likely the team to beat in the AFC North. Last season the Steelers defense was best in the NFL, allowing only 271.8 yards per game. They also allowed a league low 14.2 points per game.

Not much has changed on defense for Pittsburgh with their veteran defenders such as James Harrison, Troy Polamalu and LaMarr Woodley all returning. The Steelers were No. 1 versus the run and No. 8 against the pass this season and barring injury should be among the league's best again.

On offense the Steelers continue to be led by Ben Roethlisberger. He's coming off another fine season in which he passed for over 4000 yards with 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. One worry for Roethlisberger could be the future of his No. 1 receiver Mike Wallace. He's in the middle of a lengthy holdout that could carryover into the season. If Wallace does remain out look for the newly extended Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders to carry the load.

The Pittsburgh running game will be without their usual starter to begin the season as Rashard Mendenhall continues to rehab from an ACL injury. He's expected to miss at least the first six weeks, which leaves the starting job in Isaac Redman's hands.

The Steelers offense could look complete different overall in it's tactics with new offensive coordinator Todd Haley taking over from the departed Bruce Arians. Even if the Steelers do need a few games to adapt to Haley's style the defense should strong enough to hold fort and keep them near the top of the AFC North.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2011-2012 Season Odds Preview

Since the NFC North was formed in 2002, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the NFL’s most consistent powerhouses. Over the last nine seasons, Pittsburgh has five division titles, six playoff appearances, three trips to the Super Bowl, and two Super Bowl victories.

Last season Pittsburgh fell just short, winning the AFC Championship but losing to Green Bay in the Super Bowl. This year, they return all of the key players from that team, which finished 12-4 in the regular season and won the AFC North.

Pittsburgh’s defense, led by Lawrence Timmons, James Harrison, and Troy Polamalu, was one of the absolute best in the NFL last season. The Steelers gave up the fewest amount of points in the league at just 14.5 per game, and finished behind only San Diego in total yardage given up with just 276.8 yards per game.

The defense was particularly stingy against the rush, easily the best in the NFL surrendering just 62.8 yards per game. With all of the key members of this defense returning, it should be just as strong as it was in 2010.

On offense, Ben Roethlisberger remains a steady presence at quarterback, and both of his favorite weapons in Mike Wallace and Hines Ward return. Wallace had a breakout year in his second season last year, catching 60 passes for 1,257 yards and 10 touchdowns. Antwaan Randle El is gone, but Jerricho Cochery was signed as a solid replacement.

Rashard Mendenhall will continue to see the lion’s share of carries for Pittsburgh. He set new career highs in rushing yards (1,273) and touchdowns (13) in 2010.

The only real concern for Pittsburgh is offensive line depth, but they won 12 games and made it all the way to the Super Bowl last season with that same question mark. Winners of the NFC North three of the last four years and strong on both sides of the ball, Pittsburgh has to be considered the team to beat in the NFC North until Baltimore can prove otherwise.
