Carolina shook off a terrible start to the season to finish strong, going 4-0 SU and ATS over the last four weeks of the season including outright upsets over Atlanta and New Orleans. The Panthers haven’t started a season better than 1-5 SU over each of the last three years, a trend they will be looking to break in 2013. With a solid defense and an excellent dual-threat quarterback, Carolina could fight for a playoff spot this season. But to compete for an NFC South title, Cam Newton would have to take huge strides forward in the mental aspects of his game.

Carolina Panthers 2012-2013 Season Odds

After posting the worst record in the NFL in 2010 the Panthers had nowhere to go but up last season and they did so behind a strong rookie campaign from quarterback Cam Newton.

Odds to win NFC South: +400
Regular Season Win Total: 7.5 (Over -140)
Props: NFL MVP Odds Cam Newton 22/1

A number of experts questioned whether Newton's game could transition quickly to the NFL. He shut them up pretty quick with a stellar rookie season that saw him pass for 4051 yards with 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He was also a double threat on the ground, rushing for 706 yards and 14 touchdowns.

With their quarterback question solved for what looks to be long time the Panthers can focus on piecing together the rest of the their offense. So far it looks pretty good. Veteran Steve Smith leads the receiving corps that need a breakout from Brandon LaFell to field a true No. 2, while they upgraded at tight end by acquiring Greg Olsen form Chicago.

Newton's speed give the Panthers a running threat on every play, but they also boast two reliable backs in Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. The duo combined to rush for over 1500 yards last season and should be comfortable sharing the load again.

While the Carolina offense took off last season their defense remained flat. The D ranked 28th in the league last season and may have cost the Panthers a number of wins, as they lost by a touchdown or less five times.

The Panthers were really weak against the run last season, allowing 130.8 yards per game to rank 25th in the NFL. Help may be on the way via the draft. Carolina selected linebacker Luke Kuechly from Boston College ninth overall in the draft and he's expected to make an immediate impact.

Carolina Panthers 2011-2012 Season Odds Preview

Carolina was awful last season, finishing with the NFL’s worst record at 2-12. With New Orleans and Atlanta having a stranglehold on the top of the NFC South and Tampa Bay being way ahead of Carolina on the learning curve, this rebuild isn’t likely to happen overnight.

On the bright side for the Panthers, they do appear to have improved on paper this offseason. Carolina was able to retain their two biggest free agents, and added some new faces to the mix this year in hopes of turning things around.

Odds to Win NFC South: +1800
Regular Season Win Total: Over 4.5 (-135)

Quarterback play was a total disaster for Carolina last season as the Panthers averaged just 143.1 passing yards per game, the worst in the NFL. Enter first overall pick Cam Newton.

Newton was far-and-away the best player in college football last year, leading Auburn to a National Championship victory with his tremendous rushing and passing ability. Newton’s versatility and ability to avoid pressure should help mask issues on the offensive line. There will be growing pains, but Newton can’t possibly do much worse than Jimmy Clausen and Matt Moore did last year.

The rushing game was respectable for the Panthers last season (115.4 yards per game) led by Jonathan Stewart, and should be even better with DeAngelo Williams returning from injury and re-signing with the Panthers. With this running back core, wide receiver Steve Smith, and newly signed tight ends Greg Olsen and Jeremy Shockey, Newton will have a solid supporting cast.

The rushing defense was an issue last season, so Carolina paid big bucks to keep their best defensive lineman Charles Johnson, and used both of their draft picks after Newton on defensive linemen Terrell McClain and Sione Fua. There likely won’t be an immediate turnaround, but McClain and Fua should help.

Carolina won’t be a playoff team this year, but if Newton’s game translates to the pro level, it may be sooner than later that the Panthers are back in the hunt.
