Quarterback Steve Young, after starting his pro career in the USFL, then toiling for a terrible  Tampa team, then serving as Joe Montana's backup, finally shook the monkey off his back, throwing six touchdown passes in leading the San Francisco 49ers to a 49-26 shellacking of the San Diego Chargers at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami in Super Bowl XXIX.

The 49ers covered the Super Bowl XXIX spread as 18-point favorites, and the game cruised OVER its total of 54. That betting spread was the largest in a Super Bowl since the Jets upset the Colts as 19-point dogs in Super Bowl III.

San Francisco went 13-3 during the regular season, earning the top seed for the NFC playoffs, then defeated Chicago and Dallas to return to the Super Bowl after a four-year absence.

San Diego went 11-5 during the regular season, earning the two seed in the AFC, then came from behind to beat Miami and upset the Steelers in Pittsburgh to win its first-ever AFC championship.

The 49ers got things rolling right away in the Super Bowl, as Young hit Jerry Rice from 44 yards out on the third play of the game for a 7-0 San Francisco lead. Just five minutes later Young and running back Ricky Watters combined for a 51-yard score, giving the Niners a 14-0 advantage.

San Diego pulled to within 14-7 on a Natrone Means touchdown plunge, but Young threw two more touchdown passes before halftime, as San Francisco took a 28-10 lead into the locker room.

The Niners scored twice more in the third quarter, and Young and Rice combined for one more score in the fourth, giving San Francisco a 49-18 lead, before the Chargers tacked on a meaningless score for the final tally.

Young was named the game's MVP, the 16th time through the first 29 Super Bowls a quarterback won the award.

Former Super Bowl MVP Rice and Watters both scored three touchdowns.

San Francisco’s victory gave the NFC 11 consecutive Super Bowl titles. It also gave the 49ers five Lombardi Trophies, although they haven't won one since.

San Diego has yet to return to the Super Bowl.
