The Miami Dolphins capped their third consecutive trip to the Super Bowl with a decisive 24-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings, winning Super Bowl VIII and easily covering as 6.5-point favorites.
The Dolphins failed to post another perfect season, but emerged as the top team in their conference, leading the AFC East with a 12-2 regular season record while holding opponents to just 10.7 points per game, only twice surrendering greater than 16 points in a game while going a perfect 7-0 SU at home.
Miami outclassed the Cincinnati Bengals in their AFC Divisional Playoff matchup, scoring on three of their first four possessions en route to a 34-16 victory. The Dolphins racked up 400 total yards against Cincy, including 241 yards on the ground and 159 passing yards from Dolphins QB Bob Griese.
The Dolphins continued their dominance on the ground in their 27-10 AFC Conference Championship win over the Oakland Raiders, compiling 266 rushing yards led by RB Larry Csonka and his three TD runs. But it was a quiet day for Griese, who went three for six with 34 yards in the air.
The Vikings entered the playoffs after winning the NFC Central with a 12-2 record. Minny topped the Washington Redskins in their NFC Divisional playoff matchup, scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 13-10 deficit to post a 27-20 win.
Minnesota followed up with a dominant defensive performance against Dallas in the NFC Conference Championship, holding the Cowboys to just 153 total yards of offense in a 27-10 win.
It was another relaxing afternoon for Bob Griese on Super Sunday at Rice Stadium in Houston. Griese completed just six of seven passes for 63 yards as the Dolphins’ ground attack ran all over the Vikings.
Csonka put on a performance worthy of his Super Bowl MVP honors, carrying the ball an incredible 33 times for 145 yards and a pair of TDs, powering the Dolphins to a 24-0 lead.
QB Fran Tarkenton broke through for the Vikings with a four-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter for Minnesota’s only score of the game, cutting the Dolphins’ lead to 24-7.
The UNDER rewarded Super Bowl bettors for the sixth consecutive year as sportsbooks set the point total at 33.
