Nover: Niners Tomsula Dealt a Bad Hand

Few first-year NFL head coaches have been dealt a worse opening hand than Jim Tomsula at San Francisco.

Not only is Tomsula replacing the wildly successful Jim Harbaugh, who left the team in turmoil, but he's had to deal with a shocking number of departures via retirement, free agency, trade, or being kicked off the team in the case of star pass rusher Aldon Smith.

Miami Dolphins 2015 Total Wins Prop

The Miami Dolphins entered the season with high expectations, with some experts picking them to dethrone the Patriots as AFC East champs. Four weeks into the season, and the Dolphins have canned their head coach and a legitimate argument can be made that they’re the worst team in the league.

Props: Winston Interceptions, OROY Odds

Jameis Winston has not exactly been lighting the world on fire since joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The rookie signal caller has completed just 54.9 percent of his passes while throwing seven interceptions through his first four professional games.

If Winston keeps throwing picks at the same rate he has early in his career then he is projected to tie the NFL rookie record of 28 interceptions. Luckily for Bucs supporters, the quarterback that currently holds that distinction is Peyton Manning, so maybe it will all work out.

Nover: Seahawks Set to Slip Under .500?

Entering Week 5 of the NFL season there were 13 teams below .500. The two-time defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks could join that list after Sunday.

The Seahawks are three-point road underdogs against Cincinnati.

Noted handicapper Steve Fezzik, the only person to win the prestigious SuperContest in Las Vegas two years in a row, isn't worried about Seattle. He has the Seahawks as the third-best team on his NFL power rankings behind only New England and Green Bay.

Cowboys Rare Double-Digit Home Dogs

The Dallas Cowboys are in unfamiliar territory for Sunday’s contest with the New England Patriots, being tabbed as double-digit home underdogs for the first time since 1990.

New England (3-0 SU, 2-0-1 ATS) will have some fresh legs thanks to a Week 4 bye, while the Cowboys (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) are badly banged up and are clearly missing two of their franchise players in star quarterback Tony Romo and talented wideout Dez Bryant.

Despite the rest, the Pats are historically poor performers after a bye week for bettors. Bill Belichick’s crew are just 1-4-1 ATS in the last six years following the bye.

Covering the spread hasn’t been an easy task for the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. The ‘Boys are an ugly 1-6 ATS in their last seven home contests.

Colts Red-Hot in Thursday Night Football

The Indianapolis Colts are no stranger to primetime showdowns on the road in Thursday Night Football contests and have historically been a lights out play for their bettors with the eyes of the nation solely upon them.

Since its inception in 2006, Indy has participated in Thursday Night Football eight times. The Colts have never played at home during that span but are a sizzling 8-0 SU and 7-1 ATS. Indy’s only missed opportunity to cash came in 2010 against the Tennessee Titans, failing to cover the spread by a single point in a 30-28 victory.

Colts-Texans TNF Running Back Props

Indianapolis Colts running back Frank Gore

Ryan Mallett squaring off against Matt Hasselback doesn’t present the most attractive quarterback matchup for Thursday Night Football’s Indianapolis Colts-Houston Texans tilt, but if you’re looking for some alternative betting options, online sportsbook Bovada is offering some prop specials for the men controlling the ground game.

TNF: Colts vs Texans Week 5 NFL Odds

The AFC South hasn’t been the most exciting division in the NFL this season, but fans and bettors alike will be hoping the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans can put on a better show in Thursday Night Football.

Thanks to a 16-13 overtime victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday, the Colts hold the division lead with a mediocre 2-2 SU record. The Tennessee Titans are second at 1-2, while the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Texans are bringing up the rear at 1-3 SU.

Indy was forced to start veteran signal caller Matt Hasselbeck in Week 3 due to a shoulder injury to star QB Andrew Luck and Hasselbeck filled in admirably. The 40-year-old finished the game 30-of-47 for 282 yards and a touchdown in the victory. The team hasn’t named their starter for Thursday’s game, but are indicating that Luck will be back behind center.

Houston is just 1-3 ATS at the betting window so far in the young NFL campaign and the Colts have been even worse going 0-4 ATS.

Since its inception in 2006, the Colts are undefeated in Thursday Night Football despite playing every game away from Indianapolis.

SN: NFL Week 5 Betting Trends Analysis

Unbeaten Cincinnati should bury Seattle, which has a struggling offensive line and is traveling on a short week having just hosted Detroit on Monday night.

Or should the Bengals? Cincinnati is 16-2-1 in its last 19 home games, 15-3-1 against the spread (ATS).

Impressive, but. Seattle is underrated away from boisterous CenturyLink Field covering 15 of its past 23 road contests. The Seahawks also are 11-3 ATS on the road when meeting an opponent with a winning home mark.
