Chael Sonnen will make his Bellator debut on January 21 in Hollywood and his opponent is no stranger to “The American Gangster.” Some 20-plus years ago, Sonnen pinned an opponent in collegiate wrestling in 30 seconds, which would be an innocuous event if the opponent didn’t turn out to be Tito Ortiz.
Sonnen opened as a -155 favorite for the grudge match that nobody, including Sonnen himself, knew existed, with Ortiz coming back at +125.
The path here wasn’t pretty, or free of controversy, but BJ Penn is set to make his return to the Octagon, as “The Prodigy” faces Yair Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night 103 in Phoenix. Penn is not getting an easy win here, as Rodriguez is one of the best young fighters in the organization.
Aside from the main event, the card doesn’t feature much in terms of name value but fighters like Joe Lauzon, Marcin Held and Sergio Pettis offer plenty of intrigue.
Azarões Amanda Nunes e Cody Garbrandt quebraram a banca no último evento do ano
2016 was a landmark year for the UFC. The company was sold to WME-IMG for a record $4.2 billion, Conor McGregor became the biggest star in the sport (maybe in all of sports) and we saw an increased interest from fighters in a union.
Of course, it was also a banner year for books, as faves hit at a 63.2 percent rate throughout 2016. However, there were still plenty of times where bettors took it to books as well with underdogs dominating the beginning of the year.
2015 was a historic year for upsets in the UFC. Seven titles changed hands during the year, and no upset was bigger than Holly Holm’s over the once-invincible Ronda Rousey. For the year, underdogs posted a 180-288 record vs favorites, earning the W in 38.5% of fights. Will 2016 once again be a big year for the underdog, or will the favorites simply do what they’re supposed to do?
UFC 207 will feature the long-awaited return of Ronda Rousey. Since Rousey lost the UFC bantamweight title to Holly Holm at UFC 193, the strap has been tossed around like a game of hot potato from Holm to Miesha Tate to Amanda Nunes. Rousey doesn’t have an easy task to reclaim the title, as Nunes is an aggressive finisher.
The co-main event features another title fight, as Dominick Cruz looks to defend his bantamweight title against heavy-hitting Cody Garbrandt. With Cruz and Garbrandt chirping each other leading into the fight, you should expect some fireworks.
Ronda Rousey will make her long-awaited return to the Octagon when she challenges Amanda Nunes for the UFC women’s bantamweight title at UFC 207. Rousey has not fought since she dropped the belt – in her lone career loss – to Holly Holm at UFC 193.
