Horse Match Up Wagering

Betting Match Ups in horse racing should appeal to sports bettors, who are used to deciding between two teams with a point spread and not a field of a dozen horses.

Instead of handicapping the entire field and deciding on a winner, a Match Up involves two horses in the field, with a money line similar to what is found in sports betting.

The bettor is simply wagering on which horse will finish ahead of the other, regardless of whether or not the horse wins.

Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 6 Wagering

The Pick 3 wager involves structuring a ticket to hit three consecutive races, and before the first race in the three-race sequence starts.

To cash your ticket, you must have the winning horse of all three races on your ticket, no small task.

Horizontal wagers can be a bit more complicated to structure and hit, and all of the handicapping has to be done in advance.

Daily Double Wagering

Many newcomers to the horse racing game may not know this, but the Daily Double was the first  exotic wager offered at racetracks.

It was first offered at Connaught Park Racetrack in Ottawa in 1931, used as an incentive to get horseplayers to the track early.

Trifecta Wagering

Cashing a Trifecta ticket involves getting the top three finishers in a race in exact order, a tall task, but one that can reap great dividends for a good (or sometimes lucky) horseplayer.

Quinella Wagering

A Quinella is similar to an Exacta, except for the fact that is does not matter what order your two horses come in, the payoff will be the same.

That differs from an Exacta box. If you like two horses and play an Exacta box and your first choice is a longshot and your other choice is a favorite, in most cases you will be rewarded more if your longshot wins the race.

Exacta Wagering

An Exacta wager is putting together the top two finishers of a race in the exact order. It is tougher than traditional Win, Place, and Show wagering, but obviously not as difficult as attempting to hit a Trifecta or Superfecta.

There are many ways to place exacta wagers, probably the most common a two horse Exacta Box.

Win, Place, and Show Wagering

Looking to jump in the betting pool? A good place to start is with traditional wagering, or the simplest way to wager, and that is in the win, place, and show pools.

A Win bet is simple. You cash if your horse wins. If you wager $2.00 on a 5/1 shot and it wins, your ticket will be worth $12.00.

Triple Crown Betting

While horse racing is considered a “fringe” sport among mainstream sports fans for much of the year, the main exception to that is during the Triple Crown,

Each spring the top three-year-olds in training go through a grueling three-race series, starting with the two most exciting minutes in sports, the Kentucky Derby at historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
