Kentucky Derby Prop Odds

It’s like the Super Bowl, only it’s on a horse track and it’s in May.

So two weeks after the NFL draft unleashes a new wave of talent to the gridiron, trainers release their herd of 20 horses from the gates at Churchill Downs.

And online racebooks such as Bovada unleash a Super-Bowl-style slew of Derby prop odds to make the day even more exciting.

They call it the most exciting two minutes in sports but with all these fun prop bets, it will be hours of fun on Saturday.

Kentucky Derby Betting Value

The 137th running of the Kentucky Derby is upon us, and this crew of 20 three-year-olds appears as evenly matched as we have seen once we get past the two likely betting favorites, Dialed In and Uncle Mo.

So how can the recreational horse bettor make some money on Saturday while watching horse racing's marquee event?

Kentucky Derby Betting Preview

Early odds on the 137th Running of the Roses are posted, and as expected Dialed In is the current favorite to win the 2011 Kentucky Derby.

Currently at 3/1 to win at Bovada, he could drop to 2/1 or lower by post time once the general public bets heavily on the favorite. Dialed In has a win in his maiden special race at Churchill Downs as well as wins in both Grade 1 stakes races he’s run.

Kentucky Derby Contender Odds Update

Betting on the Kentucky Derby is one of those things everybody wants to do, whether they are a casual horse fan or a regular racebook player.

And this year, the field of Derby contenders is huge and varied with a dozen horses rated as 20/1 or less in Kentucky Derby futures at

Last year's Juvenile winner Uncle Mo is still a favorite but Dialed In and Soldat have jumped up the odds board with recent wins in Derby prep races.

Uncle Mo Kentucky Derby favorite

A trio of New York horses lead the early odds to win the 2011 Kentucky Derby with Uncle Mo leading the way.

The Breeders' Cup juvenile winner seems to have his mojo and bettors like what they have seen in the son of 1998 Derby favorite Indian Charlie. Racebook managers are reading carefully, opening him as 4/1 favorites a full five months ahead of the Churchill Downs run.

Todd Pletcher will train the horse, who arrived in Florida two weeks before Christmas to begin workouts in the run-up to the Derby prep schedule.

Horse Match Up Wagering

Betting Match Ups in horse racing should appeal to sports bettors, who are used to deciding between two teams with a point spread and not a field of a dozen horses.

Instead of handicapping the entire field and deciding on a winner, a Match Up involves two horses in the field, with a money line similar to what is found in sports betting.

The bettor is simply wagering on which horse will finish ahead of the other, regardless of whether or not the horse wins.
