Orange Bowl

When tiny Bucknell defeated hometown Miami in the inaugural Orange Bowl, way back in 1935, few of the 5,134 fans in attendance could’ve predicted the game’s importance to college football in the years to come. By 1965, when Bear Bryant led a 10-0 Alabama team against 9-2 Texas, millions of viewers across America watched the Longhorns tip the Crimson Tide 21-17 in the first bowl game broadcast nationally on prime-time television.

Citrus Bowl

Sugar Bowl

The Sugar Bowl has been played annually on New Year’s Day since 1916, with the exception of years in which January 1 falls on a Sunday, which pushes the game to January 2. Ohio State met Alabama in a College Football Playoff semifinal game in 2015, and the Sugar Bowl will host one of the semifinal games every three seasons. Two of the top teams from the SEC and Big 12 play in the Sugar Bowl in years that it isn’t hosting a playoff game.

The Outback Bowl is played annually on New Year’s Day in Tampa, Florida. This event was originally called the Hall of Fame Bowl from 1986 to 1994 before being renamed the Outback Bowl under new sponsorship in 1995. Peach Bowl

A committee appointed by the Lions Club of Atlanta was turned down three times in its attempt to bring a bowl game to the city, but the group finally received NCAA certification in 1968 and the first Peach Bowl was played December 30 that year at Georgia Tech’s Grant Field. LSU beat Florida State 31-27. The Peach Bowl moved to Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium in 1971 and then to the Georgia Dome in 1993 through 2016. For the foreseeable future, it will be held at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

Cotton Bowl

The inaugural Cotton Bowl was played at the stadium of the same name at Dallas’ Fair Park, home of the State Fair of Texas, on Jan. 1, 1937, between TCU and Marquette. The bowl was the brainchild of J. Curtis Sanford, a Dallas oilman. He attended the 1936 Rose Bowl featuring SMU and Stanford and decided his city should have a game like that. Sanford paid TCU and Marquette $10,000 each, and 17,000 fans showed up to see the Frogs win 16-6.

Fiesta Bowl

After the Western Athletic Conference watched its conference champions miss out on bowl invites in 1968 and 1969, while an undefeated Arizona State squad settled for the Peach Bowl in 1970, the Fiesta Bowl was born.

The inaugural game in 1971 pitted a 9-1 ASU team against 8-2 Florida State, and in a sign of things to come, the Sun Devils knocked off the Seminoles in a 45-38 thriller. ASU won four of the first five Fiesta Bowls on its home field in Tempe, Arizona, but the Sun Devils’ last appearance came in 1983, when they defeated Oklahoma.

Rose Bowl

The very first Rose Bowl was played on January 1, 1902, and the game has been played annually on New Year’s Day since 1916. Since the inception of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the Rose Bowl is used as the destination of one of the semifinal games every three years. The game is played on New Year’s Day unless January 1 falls on a Sunday, in which case the game is played on January 2.
