View From Down Under: Finals pressure on as Scorchers tipped to defend BBL title

With the Perth Scorchers’ place in the Big Bash League finals all but assured, most of the pressure in the final week of regular fixtures will be on the Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Renegades.

The defending champion Scorchers lead the tournament on 12 points after eight games and need some striking fortune from the other top teams, coupled with some extremely bad luck, to miss the final four.

View From Down Under: Kyrgios firms as fourth favourite to take Australian Open title

Nick Kyrgios’ impressive win at the Brisbane International has seen the 17th-ranked Aussie firm as an outside favorite ahead of next week’s Australian Open.

While Roger Federer is the short-money favorite to defend his title, Kyrgios finds himself an attractive option for punters backing him to claim his first Grand Slam.

Kyrgios defeated world No. 47 Ryan Harrison in straight sets in Brisbane to earn his fourth ATP tour title and first on home soil, making him fourth favorite to take out the season-opening major at Melbourne Park.

View From Down Under: Australia tipped to end Ashes on a high despite England fightback

England’s fightback in the Boxing Day test has breathed new life into the Ashes series ahead of the fifth and final test starting in Sydney on Thursday.

England turned the tables on the Aussies at the MCG to force a draw and end the host’s chances of a 5-0 series whitewash.

But while the tourists showed some long-awaited fight, England has not won in Australia since 2011 and is still a long shot to take a win at the SCG.

View From Down Under: Federer tipped to open Hopman Cup with a win to start 20th pro year

World No. 2 Roger Federer has arrived in Australia as he embarks on a milestone 20th year on the professional tennis tour.

While his eyes may be focused on defending his Australian Open title later this month, first the Swiss star will look for some redemption in the Hopman Cup mixed teams tournament in Perth.

View From Down Under: Australia the favorite for Boxing Day Test and Ashes sweep

After reclaiming the Ashes with a third straight Test win in Perth this week, Australia has its sights set on a 5-0 whitewash when the Boxing Day Test gets underway on Tuesday.

Australia has comprehensively dominated England so far this series, but will have one eye on the weather and the other on injuries as it looks to continue its winning streak.

Aussie captain Steve Smith was part of the Michael Clarke side that swept the last series in Australia four years ago and makes no secret of the fact that he wants to share another sweep.
