New Kind Of Parity For The Sweet 16

So much for parity.

After two rounds of the NCAA tournament it’s mostly favorites who have punched their way through to the Sweet 16 with the exception of the 11 vs. 10 game Friday night when Gonzaga takes on Syracuse. Only two teams remain who play outside the 'Power 5 conferences' and only five teams remain who started the season at worse than 30-1 to win the NCAA championship.

Can the Cardiac 'Canes Do it Again?

With a wild first weekend of the NCAA Tournament in the books, sports bettors should expect the madness to continue in Thursday’s Miami-Villanova clash. Sportsbooks opened No. 2 Villanova as 4.5-point favorites, with the total set at 142.5. The No. 3 Hurricanes have traditionally fared well in this series, covering the spread in seven of their last 10 meetings with ‘Nova.

Shark Bites
  • Everyone one of Villanova’s sweet sixteen games in our records have gone UNDER (0-4 OU).
  • The total has gone OVER in six of Villanova's last eight games in March.
  • Villanova is 16-3 SU in its last 19 games against teams with winning records.

The Wildcats cruised to easy wins in the first two rounds, but this game won’t be a cakewalk for Jay Wright’s crew. Guards Angel Rodriguez and Sheldon McClellan were on a different level during Miami's victory over Wichita State, and they’ll need to come up big once again versus a very good Hurricanes backcourt that features Josh Hart and Ryan Arcidiacono.

The ‘Canes have been far from a safe bet lately, however. Miami is an ugly 1-4 ATS in their past five games. If they can pull out a win this team will be in unchartered territory, as the Hurricanes have never won a game in the Sweet Sixteen.

Oklahoma Has Been A God-Awful Bet

The Oklahoma Sooners are one of the most exciting teams to watch in college basketball, but that has basically made them the optimal fade material. Oklahoma has failed to cover in seven consecutive games and are just 2-11 ATS in their past 13 games. The Sooners will have their hands full in their Sweet 16 matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies Thursday.

OU can thank Buddy Hield for making it this far in the tournament as the senior has scored a combined 63 points during the NCAA Tournament, which accounts for nearly 40 percent of the team’s offense. The Sooners let VCU climb out of a 13-point half-time deficit in the Round of 32 before Hield scored 21 of the last 29 points for the team to help win.

Texas A&M is coming off one of the most improbable comebacks in college basketball history, as the Aggies were down 12 points with less than 40 seconds left before forcing overtime and eventually winning in double-OT. If there is one player that can keep up with Buddy Buckets, it is Daniel House. The senior has averaged 24.7 points in the Aggies’ past three games.

Can Red-Hot Jayhawks Be Stopped?

Kansas enters their Sweet 16 matchup against Maryland riding a 16 game winning streak Thursday. The Jayhawks have also gone a stellar 13-3 ATS during their winning streak, as the team has posted an average scoring margin of +14.3 points per game. Kansas will be facing a stout defense in Maryland, which has allowed just 66.3 points per game this season.

Kansas has relatively cruised through the first two rounds of March Madness, with the Jayhawks winning by 26 and 12 points respectively. The senior guidance of Perry Ellis has been a big factor for Kansas, as the forward has scored 21 points in both games in the NCAA Tournament while shooting a combined 17-for-24 from the field.

After a tight first round affair against South Dakota State, Maryland put up a better, but not perfect, performance against Hawaii in the Round of 32. Though the Terps scored 73 points they couldn’t buy a three if they won the lottery, as the team went an appalling 1-for-18 from beyond the arc against the Rainbow Warriors.

Oregon Bringing A-Game Against the Best

Oregon’s crazy good run over the second half of the season has been not just been amazing on the court, but also at the betting window. The Ducks have been especially strong against opponents above .500, with Oregon going 11-4 ATS in their past 15 against winning teams. Oregon will be looking to make the Elite Eight for the first time in school history when they take on the Duke Blue Devils in the Sweet 16 Thursday.

Oregon is coming off a sloppy performance in which they needed a late run to beat upset-minded St. Joseph’s in the Round of 32. The Ducks shot just 39.6 percent from the floor and went 6-for-24 from downtown in that outing. Dillon Brooks is coming off one of his best performances of the season though, as the sophomore scored 25 points and was the only Oregon player that looked respectable shooting.

After 20 minutes it looked like Duke was going to cruise into the Sweet 16, but careless play in the second almost resulted in an epic collapse. Ultimately, Grayson Allen and Brandon Ingram were too much for Yale, as the Duke duo scored a combined 54 points while shooting 50 percent from the floor.

Gonzaga: Mightiest Cinderella Ever?

It’s only the Sweet 16 but already the Gonzaga Bulldogs have made history.

This season’s Gonzaga team marks the first time a double digit seed has been favored in its first three games of the NCAA tournament in at least 20 years, which is as far back as our database goes. (It’s a safe assumption that also means the first time ever.)

The Bulldogs opened minus-4.5 against Syracuse for Friday’s game after being set as 1-point faves over Utah in the second round and 2-point faves over Seton Hall in the first round.
