NHL Betting Lines: Odds to Make the Playoffs

The marathon of the NHL season is getting set to start and with that in mind, sportsbooks are starting to release lines on season-long props. One of my favorites to bet on is whether a team will make the playoffs. Below are my favorite value bets and a couple of teams to avoid completely for the time being as their situations are not yet clear.

Canada One Game Away From World Cup Win

With one game in the books, Team Europe will now have to win two straight games to take the World Cup of Hockey – something Thomas Vanek, a forward on Europe, said would be “impossible”.  Team Canada has yet to lose heading into Game 2 of their best-of-three series with Europe and will look to close the World Cup curtains Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre.

Penguins and Blackhawks Lead Odds in Respective Conference Futures

October is the best time of year for pro sports fans and bettors: the NFL is in full swing, MLB playoffs start and for hockey nerds like me, the NHL comes back. Although the World Cup took away a lot of the anticipation and was by most accounts a massive failure, I am still counting the minutes to October 12 when the puck drops on the NHL season.

Sharks Could go All in This Year With Future Uncertain

The NHL’s Pacific division produced the Stanley Cup’s Western Conference representative last year as the Sharks pulled off multiple upsets en route to the final where they eventually lost to the Penguins in six games. This division has the potential to be the most competitive in the league with three teams and possibly a fourth who all have what it takes to make a run at a title.

Let’s start at the top and work our way down:

Caps and Pens Expected to Duke it Out in Race For Metropolitan

The race for the Metropolitan division is once again expected to be one that involves just two horses. One of those horses is returning as the defending Stanley Cup champion and the other will try to rebound from choking in the playoffs after recording one of the best regular seasons in the history of the league.

Dallas Stars Could Twinkle as Defending Central Division Champs

The Central was the toughest division in hockey last year and bookmakers like it to stay that way in the 2016-17 season. Four of the top seven Western Conference futures favorites and four of the top eight Stanley Cup futures favorites come from the Central division as three of those teams – the Blackhawks, the Stars and the Blues – all finished with over 100 points last year and the Predators narrowly missed joining that club with 96 points of their own.

Canada, Russia Renew Hockey Rivalry Saturday

The semifinals are now set for the World Cup of Hockey and the first game pits the undefeated Canadians against the streaking Russians. Team Canada looks like the typical powerhouse we’ve come to expect but Team Russia is playing with years of heartache on their shoulders.

No Shock — Canada Favorites Going Into World Cup Semis

Crosby Price Canada

The World Cup of Hockey’s version of the final four goes down this weekend with Canada set to take on Russia on Saturday evening, and Sweden playing Team Europe on Sunday afternoon. Canada is now a -250 favorite to win the tournament after originally opening at -110 back in July. Sweden has the next-best odds at +400.

Canada Massive Favorite in Battle for Group A Supremacy

All teams have now played two round-robin games in the World Cup of Hockey and just one of four spots in the crossover semifinals is still up for grabs. Team Canada and Team Europe have both already clinched playoff spots and will be battling for top spot in Group A tonight.
