Habs Have Owned Leafs as of Late

The Toronto Maple Leafs-Montreal Canadiens rivalry is one of the best in the NHL, but it’s become extremely lopsided in recent seasons. In the last 11 meetings between the Canadian squads, the Habs are a sizzling 11-1. They’ll renew acquaintances in La Belle Province Saturday evening.

Shark Bites
  • The OVER is 8-2-1 in the Maple Leafs last 11 overall
  • The Maple Leafs are 0-5 in the last 5 meetings in Montreal
  • The Canadiens are 2-9 in their last 11 games following a win

Montreal has also won all three encounters with Toronto this season. The Canadiens are a banged up bunch, especially on the blueline. Nathan Beaulieu, Jeff Petry and Tom Gilbert are all sidelined, meaning the Leafs would be wise to take advantage of that defensive hole in this one.

Mike Condon, the expected starter for Montreal, has had his ups and downs in the absence of all-world goaltender Carey Price, but he’s been much better as of late. Condon has yielded just six goals in his last three games, with Montreal going 2-0-1 in that stretch.

High-Flying Ducks Host Oilers Friday

Anaheim Ducks NHL

The hottest team in hockey tangles with the coldest team as the Anaheim Ducks host the Edmonton Oilers in a meeting between two Pacific Division clubs firmly on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Shark Bites
  • The Oilers are 0-7 SU in their last seven games versus the Western Conference.
  • The Oilers are 2-13 SU in their last 15 games on the road.
  • The Ducks are 9-0 SU in their last nine games versus the Western Conference.

At online shop Bovada, the Ducks are big faves at -265 while the Oilers are +215 in moneyline markets. As far as the total is concerned, OVER 5 goals is priced at -120 while UNDER 5 goals is currently tabbed at -110.

The Ducks, who provide more betting value when backing them “to win in regulation”, have won six-straight games heading into Friday’s meeting and shot up the Pacific Division standings following a very uninspired start to the 2015-16 campaign. The Ducks began the season with a 1-9 SU record in their opening 10 games but have gotten better and better with each passing month, culminating in a sensational 10-2 SU mark in a dozen February games.

The Oilers, habitual tenants of the Pacific Division basement, are currently mired in a six-game losing skid and are on pace to compete for the top draft pick in yet another entry draft.

Edmonton has lost its goal-scoring touch of late having netted just one in each of the last two games and a paltry 10 during their six-game skid. The offensive slump comes at a bad time as they tangle with a Ducks team that is coming off a 1-0 shutout against the Buffalo Sabres in their last contest.

The way they played in October, the playoffs looked highly unlikely for the Ducks. Considering they are just four points back of the Pacific-leading Los Angeles Kings heading into the Friday’s slate of games, a division crown is more than feasible for the NHL’s hottest team.

Languid Wild Hope to Avoid 3-Game Skid

Minnesota Wild Braden Holtby Washington Capitals NHL

Whether in the win or loss column, hockey teams do not get streakier than the Minnesota Wild lately. The struggling Central Division club will look to avert a three-game losing streak when they visit the Washington Capitals Friday evening.

Shark Bites
  • The Wild are 1-4 SU in their last five games versus the Capitals in Washington.
  • The Wild are 1-8 SU in their last nine games versus teams with a winning record.
  • The Capitals are 17-3 SU in their last 20 games at home.

The Wild followed up an eight-game losing skid with a nice four-game winning streak but have now lost back-to-back games and have two of the Eastern Conference’s best on deck. After Friday’s meeting with the Caps, they host the Florida Panthers Sunday.

During the recent win streak, the Wild were firing on all cylinders, averaging over five goals scored per game and posting a margin of victory of 3.25 per game. That has come to a screeching halt, however, as the team has managed just three goals in the two losses since.

The Capitals, the NHL’s best team by some margin with 92 points entering Friday’s slate of games, are coming off an embarrassing loss of their own in their last time out. Netminder and Vezina Trophy frontrunner Braden Holtby was pulled after allowing three goals on 18 shots in a 4-3 defeat to the lowly Montreal Canadiens back on Wednesday.

If Holtby does indeed get the start Friday, he will look to build on already-solid numbers versus the Wild in his career. In six appearances versus Minnesota, the Caps' puck stopper has gone 4-2 with a 2.32 goals against average and .918 save percentage.
