Leafs Struggle in Visits to Calgary

Leo Komarov Johnny Gaudreau Maple Leafs Flames NHL

As the Toronto Maple Leafs do their best to ensure a high pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, it is tough to pick a spot to back them with confidence. Tuesday night is yet another one of those games where Leafs backers, if you’re still out there, should proceed with caution as their club visits the Calgary Flames.

Shark Bites
  • The visiting team is 3-15 SU in the last 18 games between the Leafs and Flames.
  • The Flames are 14-6 SU in their last 20 home games.
  • The Maple Leafs are 5-1 SU in their last six games with two days off in between games.

The Leafs don’t visit Cowtown often, but when they do, it usually results in a loss. The Leafs are just 1-8 in their last nine games in Calgary and are currently +115 pups at online book Bovada.

The Flames have been flickering of late but have won two of their last three games after a three-game losing skid heading into the All-Star Break. The Flames defeated both the Carolina Hurricanes and Vancouver Canucks by scores of 4-1 with a 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets sandwiched between those victories.

The last time these two clubs met in Calgary was in was on March 13 of last season. The Flames hammered the Leafs 6-3 behind three points (one goal, two assists) from Johnny Gaudreau. Toronto’s last win in Calgary came on October 30, 2013 in a 4-2 contest.

Scores are usually high when these two meet in Alberta as the OVER has hit in each of the last four contests at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Red-Hot Ducks Begin Road Trip at Pens

Sidney Crosby Pittburgh Penguins Anaheim Ducks NHL

Losers of nine of their first 10 games the season, the Anaheim Ducks began the campaign in uncharacteristically poor fashion and many left them for dead. That start seems ages ago, however, as the surging Ducks bring the league’s longest winning streak into Monday’s date with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Shark Bites
  • The Penguins are 1-4 SU in their last five games against the Western Conference.
  • OVER is 4-0-1 in the Ducks’ last five games and 5-1-1 in the Penguins last seven games.
  • The Ducks are 10-2 SU in their last 12 games versus teams from the Western Conference.

The Ducks are currently riding a six-game winning streak and are steadily climbing the Pacific Division standings heading into the new week. The aforementioned slow start put them in a deep hole, but the Ducks are currently third in the division, just one point back of the San Jose Sharks and eight back of the Los Angeles Kings.

Pittsburgh, and more specifically Sidney Crosby, has started to round into form as well. The Pens are currently eighth in the division but have gone 6-2-2 in their last 10 games and were enjoying a four-game winning streak before losing 6-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday. Crosby has tallied eight points (five goals, three assists) in three February games alone and is currently tied with Evgeni Malkin for the team in points (49). Malkin, who has missed the previous two games with a lower-body injury, is still listed as day-to-day.

Monday begins a stiff test for the Ducks as they embark on a seven game road trip that starts in Pennsylvania (at Pittsburgh, at Philadelphia) and will take them to Columbus, Chicago, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. For a team that is currently sub-.500 away from home, this could be a trip that makes or breaks the Ducks’ postseason aspirations.

Wings in Revenge Spot Versus Panthers

Detroit Red Wings Florida Panthers NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will have revenge on their minds when they tangle with the Florida Panthers at Joe Louis Arena Monday night. The Wings were beaten soundly by a score of 6-3 when the two Atlantic Division teams met in Sunrise last week.

Shark Bites
  • The Panthers are 5-0 SU in their last five games versus Red Wings in Detroit.
  • The Red Wings are 0-4 SU in their last four games after a win.
  • The Panthers are 12-5 SU in their last 17 road games.

The Wings, currently -115 at online shop Bovada, are in danger of falling out of the Eastern Conference playoff spots and one area they’ll have to improve on down the stretch is their performance on home ice. They have an opportunity to build some momentum at Joe Louis Arena after defeating the New York Islanders 5-1 in their last effort, but are still a paltry 1-5 in their last six home games.

The Panthers continue to be one of hockey’s better stories and sit second in the Eastern Conference and first in the Atlantic Division. A 12-game winning streak that bridged December and January catapulted them up the standings and despite losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their last effort, they’ve still won five of their last six games and own a six-point lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning in the division.

Florida has dominated Atlantic Division foes of late, taking a 7-1 SU mark in their last eight contests versus the division but the Wings will be desperate to pick up a big division win on home ice Monday night.
