Murray Favored to Move By Nishikori at the French

Although he’s the top seed, Andy Murray should not take his quarterfinal with Kei Nishikori lightly. Murray was taken out by the eighth-seeded Japanese pro in the quarters of last year’s U.S. Open and this will be the first time the pair have ever met at Roland Garros, as well as just the second time they’ve met on clay.

SHARK BITES
  • Murray holds the 8-2 advantage over Nishikori in their all-time series.
  • A semifinal berth for Nishikori would be his best ever appearance at the French Open.
  • Murray has made it past the quarters at the French Open three consecutive years.

It will come to the surprise of no one that Murray is the betting fave in this spot. Online shop Bovada has pegged the world No. 1 as the -400 favorite, meaning there’s plenty of value on the other side.

The Scot has moved easily through the field so far but it’s these late stages of Grand Slams where Murray normally falters.

Nishikori has never been able to make the leap into the elite class in the ATP but at 27 there’s still time for him to break into the top tier. A win over Murray to move on to the semis would be a massive boost to his profile as well as his confidence and at a price of +300, it's hard not to like the ninth-ranked man after his comeback performance against Fernando Verdasco, a traditional clay-court player.
