Nadal and Thiem Continue Their Clay-Court Saga at French Semis

2017 has been quite the saga for Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem. They’ve met on clay three times this year – twice in finals – and the young Austrian actually bested Rafa in their last matchup in the quarters at the 1000 level tournament in Rome back in May.

SHARK BITES
  • Nadal and Thiem have met 6 times on tour, with Nadal 4-2 in those matchups.
  • Neither man has played a match longer than 3 sets in this tournament.
  • Thiem is 0-1 in his only Grand Slam semifinal appearance which came at the French in 2016.

Thiem will head into his semifinal match with Nadal as a massive +350 underdog but after the master-class performance he put on against Novak Djokovic in the quarters, he and his backers should be confident in his ability to give Rafa a fight.

Speaking of the Spaniard, he’ll come in as a -450 fave and given that he’s yet to even come close to dropping a set so far at Roland Garros, that makes some sense. Nadal also got a break in the quarters by having his opponent, Pablo Carreno-Busta, retire in the second with an injury. Rafa will have fresh legs and the motivation of becoming the first man to win a single Grand Slam 10 separate times.

This match has the potential to be the best of the tournament the way these two men are playing right now and I highly recommend that you tune in if you have the means.
