American Sam Querrey Gets Set for the Biggest Match of His Career

Advancing past the quarters at Wimbledon for the first time in his career, Marin Cilic is on his best run since he took the title at Flushing Meadows three years ago. The sixth-ranked Croat will face the 24th-seeded Sam Querrey in the semis and for the American pro, Friday’s match will be the biggest of his career to date.

SHARK BITES
  • This is Sam Querrey’s 1st appearance in the semifinal of a Grand Slam singles tournament.
  • Cilic is 3-0 in 3 career matchups with Querrey that have been played on grass.
  • Both of Querrey and Cilic’s previous matchups at Wimbledon were decided in 5 sets.

The history between these two competitors may be short but they’ve been involved in some long matches. The most notable came at this very tournament in 2012 when Cilic and Querrey engaged in a marathon that took five hours and 31 minutes to find a winner. It was no Isner vs Mahut but it was an outing that neither man will be wanting to repeat with a Grand Slam final on the horizon.

Odds over at online sportsbook Bovada have Cilic as the -310 favorite with Querrey coming back at +250 on the moneyline. The shop has set a 3.5-set total for the contest with the UNDER option being offered at a price of +160.

As for the match, it kind of feels like a toss-up. Both men are playing some incredible tennis and Querrey has been in the zone, looking to become the first American man to take the title at Wimbledon since Pete Sampras did it four times in a row from 1997 to 2000. He stormed past Andy Murray in the quarters and because of that, he’ll be riding some serious momentum in the semis.

Cilic, a much healthier man than Murray, should give Querrey his best challenge so far this tournament and I’m fully expecting the Bosnian-born pro to affirm his dominance early, showing his challenger why he’s in the top tier of world tennis.
