Raonic Goes for First Win Versus Monfils

Milos Raonic Australian Open ATP Tennis

In what promises to be an exciting matchup in Melbourne, Canada’s Milos Raonic will need to record his first career win against France’s Gael Monfils if he hopes to advance to the semifinal round of the Australian Open.

In moneyline markets, Raonic is tabbed at -275 while Monfils is currently +230 at online shop BetOnline.

Raonic is 0-2 in his career versus Monfils (Raonic recorded a walkover against Monfils in San Jose back in 2011) with the most recent meeting coming on grass at Halle in 2013, but has plenty of momentum following his five-set win against No. 4 Stan Wawrinka in the fourth round.

The Canadian won the first two sets versus Wawrinka, but the Swiss battled back to take the third and fourth sets before Raonic finished things with a 6-3 fifth set. It was Raonic’s first career win versus Wawrinka.

Monfils is also playing some of the best tennis of his career. The 29-year-old is coming off a four-set victory over Andrey Kuznetsov in the fourth round; the 3-6 second set is the only one he’s dropped in the tourney thus far.

The contest has the potential to be one of the most exciting of the Open as Milos and his thunderous first serve is matched against the electrifying athleticism of Monfils.

“I have to make him feel uncomfortable and not let him get into his sort of playing comfort,” Raonic said.

“If I can keep up with the efficiency moving forward, I’ll definitely have some opportunities.”
