Rog Gets His Rematch With Raonic

The scent of revenge is in the air for Roger Federer as he prepares to face the firing squad that is Milos Raonic in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Milos, the tournament’s sixth seed, knocked Fed out of last year’s Championships in the semis in a match that would send Rog into a tailspin that forced him to re-evaluate his game plan as one of the oldest players on tour.

SHARK BITES
  • Federer holds a 7-3 advantage over Raonic in their career head-to-head.
  • Raonic is 3-3 for his career in Grand Slam quarterfinals.
  • Federer has a career .884 winning percentage within the walls of the All England Club.

After that loss, Federer stepped away from the game for a significant period to lick his wounds but he’s returned with a vengeance. He took the title at the only slam he’s competed in this year and he’s yet to lose a set at the All England Club. The Swiss legend has won four titles already this year in limited action and he’s lost just two of his 26 matches.

Because of all this – and his illustrious history on the Wimbledon grass – Fed has been pegged a -500 favorite to get by Raonic and to advance to a 12th career semifinal at the competition.

As Canada’s most successful singles tennis player ever, there’s a lot of pressure on Raonic but thus far, he’s been unable to come through for his country at a Grand Slam. He seems to lack a certain killer instinct that many thought he’d tapped into when he took out an unhealthy Federer in 2016.

Bovada has Milos coming back at +375 on the moneyline but given his struggles in the fourth round, it seems unlikely that the Canuck wins three sets against a man who’s dropped just 38 games this tournament.

That said, Raonic should be able to sneak a set with his serve if he can take Rog to a tiebreak. Because of that, -140 for this match to go over 3.5 sets is a solid bet.
