Serena Meets Kerber in Women’s Final

Serena Williams WTA Australian Open

Serena Williams tries for her fifth Grand Slam title in the past six Slam events when she takes on No. 7 Angelique Kerber in the final of the Australian Open.

Williams, the No. 1 seed, is presently -700 in moneyline markets at online shop Bovada while Kerber is +475.

Serena has rarely been tested, if at all, on her path to the final. She has yet to drop a set and has lost just 26 games in her six matches thus far—nine of those coming in the first round against Camila Giorgi (6-4, 7-5). In her last contest against Agnieszka Radwanska, she won 6-0, 6-4 to continue her dominance in the season’s first slam.

Following a 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 nail biter in the first round against Misaki Doi, Kerber has played exceptionally well en route to her matchup with Serena. The German has not lost a set since that opening round and is coming off a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Johann Konta in the semis.

The two have met six times in the past; all on hard court but never at the Australian Open. Predictably, Serena has the edge in the all-time meetings with a 5-1 record. Kerber’s win came via a 6-4, 6-4 performance in the quarterfinal round of the Cincinnati Masters back in 2012.

Their last meeting came in the final of the Tour Bank of the West Classic in 2014. The first set was a close one, but Williams prevailed 7-6(1), 6-3.

Williams will be going for her seventh career title at the Australian Open and the way she’s played thus far in the tourney, the steep price is, of course, justified.
