Shapovalov Puts Field at the U.S. Open on Notice

It takes a special talent to take the tennis world by storm at the age of 18 but Denis Shapovalov has done just that. The Canadian is on to the third round of the U.S. Open after a straight-sets rout of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and with Marin Cilic now the highest seed remaining in his quarter of the bracket, the table is set for the up-and-comer to make a deep run at Flushing Meadows.

SHARK BITES
  • Shapovalov is now 9-2 in tiebreakers in 5 matches at this U.S. Open (including qualifying).
  • Kyle Edmund is the second-highest ranked player from Great Britain.
  • Edmund’s 4th-round exit at the U.S. Open last year was his best showing at a Grand Slam.

Not only did Shapovalov beat Tsonga in their second-round matchup, at times he made the Frenchman look bad. The youngster was never in danger and the hype surrounding the Canuck has reached a level that hasn’t been seen in Canadian tennis since Eugenie Bouchard’s miraculous performance at Wimbledon in 2014.

Set to face Kyle Edmund next round, Shap has been installed as the -150 moneyline favorite with the tournament’s last remaining Brit coming back at +125. The pair of pros have split their two meetings on the tour thus far with the Canadian taking victory when the Commonwealth rivals matched up on grass at the Queen’s Club back in June.

Now with wins over two top-12 opponents, Shap has built up a good bit of momentum and his trip to the final at the Rogers Cup shows that this is no fluke. With a motor that won’t quit, an affinity for the moment and the ability to hit every shot on the court, Shapovalov is well-equipped to become a household name on the ATP tour.

-150 may seem like a chalky play for the still relatively unproven teenager but after his performance against Tsonga, it feels like insane value.
