Bellator: Sonnen vs Ortiz Betting Odds

Chael Sonnen will make his Bellator debut on January 21 in Hollywood and his opponent is no stranger to “The American Gangster.” Some 20-plus years ago, Sonnen pinned an opponent in collegiate wrestling in 30 seconds, which would be an innocuous event if the opponent didn’t turn out to be Tito Ortiz.

Sonnen opened as a -155 favorite for the grudge match that nobody, including Sonnen himself, knew existed, with Ortiz coming back at +125.

Sonnen was an all-American wrestler in college and an accomplished international Greco-Roman wrestler. Those skills are the base for his style in the cage, as everything is built around the takedown. His striking game is serviceable but exists to set up his signature double-leg takedown that he uses, perhaps, more than any other fighter.

Ortiz is one of the first devastating ground-and-pounders in MMA thanks to his powerful hands and elite wrestling skills. Many people tend to remember the old days of “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy,” but Ortiz is 3-8-1 since December 2006. He has the power advantage in the standup game but has a bad tendency to get too emotional and start slugging when it’s not in his best interest.

This is a sideshow, but it should be an interesting one. Two legendary 40-year-old fighters clashing with pride on the line. If nothing else, you can enjoy Sonnen’s mike skills heading into the bout.
