Busy August Sets Up for MMA Betting

For MMA underdog bettors, the opportunity for a big payoff is only ever a quick punch or a choke hold away and there is plenty for them to consider heading into August. The mixed martial arts world is still catching its breath after a thrilling early-summer schedule.

Fight fans watched as Fedor Emelianenko suffered his first career loss and Brock Lesnar added to his growing resume as the UFC heavyweight champ. And as always, MMA proved itself as a {URL=http://www.oddsshark.com/betting-advice/ufc-betting}profitable game for bettors {/URL}who know their mixed martial arts.

There is a bit of a lull in the MMA calendar for the remainder of July, with just an XFC and Dream 15 event on the schedule, giving bettors plenty of time to handicap a busy August. Here's a look at the best bouts in the month ahead:

UFC on Versus – August 1 Jon Jones (-600) vs. Vladimir Matyushenko (+400)

Jon Jones has been one of the brightest up-and-comers in the UFC since taking down Stephen Bonner at UFC 94 in January 2009. That victory had the young American en route to a light heavyweight title shot until a DQ loss to Matt Hamil derailed his momentum last December.

However, the former JuCo wrestling champ rebounded from that setback with a thrilling victory over Brandon Vera on UFC on Versus back in March. His opponent, Matyushenko, boasts 28 career bouts and will be the most savvy opponent Jones has faced in his short MMA career.

UFC 117 – August 7 Anderson Silva (-450) vs. Chael Sonnen (+275)

The last time Anderson Silva was in the cage, he left a bad taste in everyone's mouth with his lackluster performance and showboating in a decision win over Demian Maia back in April. UFC president Dana White blasted the middleweight champ, threatening to fire him if he ever put on a display like that again. Needless to say, bettors should expect a different fighter when Silva takes on Chael Sonnen at UFC 117.

UFC 118 – August 28 B.J. Penn (-350) vs. Frankie Edgar (+250)

Rarely will you find the current champion at plus money, but that's the case when B.J. Penn tries to avenge his lightweight title loss to Frankie Edgar at UFC 118. Edgar shocked the world with a decision victory at UFC 112 in April, improving to 13-1, while underdog bettors (assuming any had the guts to bet against Penn) did very well.

Penn told reporters he was sick heading into the bout and suffering with a sinus infection. Penn is one of the most well-rounded fighters in MMA and will be motivated to gain his belt back in Boston.

Randy Couture (-650) vs. James Toney (+375)

This MMA-versus-Boxing bout highlights the undercard at UFC 118. Former light heavyweight boxing champ James Toney tests the MMA waters after hounding Dana White for a contract. He will be out of his element against Randy Couture, a legend in the sport, but does have the punching power to end a fight. Couture should control this bout but “Lights Out” is a definite wild card.
