MMA odds are out for the main event of the Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal card, and as expected the Lightweight champion is handicapped as a heavy favorite.
After waiting to see what would become of Gilbert Melendez MMA fans now know that he will remain in the Strikeforce promotion, at least for now. His first order of business will be to defend his title against the boxing skills of Jorge Masvidal.
Melendez belongs in the UFC fighting the best in the world, and Masvidal does not fit into that category. Oddsmakers at 5Dimes have the champ as their -310 favorite to retain his title and inch himself closer to a UFC contract. As long as he doesn’t get caught with a big shot he should cruise to victory.
Masvidal has a puncher’s chance and could utilize his boxing skills enough to frustrate and confuse Melendez into making mistakes. 5Dimes has Masvidal listed as a +255 underdog to dethrone the champ, and as we’ve seen in MMA anything can happen.
The moneyline on Melendez has moved around a bit since it was first posted at -315; the action has driven that number down to -400 and then back up to -310. The payout on Masvidal was as high as +310 but has dropped as more bettors opt for the upset.
The co-main event features a women's Bantamweight title fight between Cristiane Santos and Hiroko Yamanaka. Both fighters have been on impressive win streaks of late and will look to test the other and put on a good show.
Santos has had little trouble against her competition in years and will be looking for a challenge against the Japanese MMA star. If Santos can keep the fight standing and stay out of submission attempts she should dominate with striking and wrestling skills.
Light Heavyweight standout Gegard Mousasi will be back in action in a matchup against Ovince St. Preux. Mousasi is one of the best in the world at 205 lbs and will also be looking for an impressive win to keep his four-fight unbeaten streak alive and perhaps earn a UFC contract.
