Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg

The best Welterweight fighter outside of the UFC gets another challenge this Saturday night when he tries to defend his Strikeforce Welterweight championship for the second time. To do that he will have to beat Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos.

Nick Diaz (23-7-1) is on an eight-fight win streak and is undefeated since going to Strikeforce. Diaz is a lethal mixture of boxing and Brazilian Jui-jitsu who has more experience than most veterans in the sport. His ground game is one of the best in MMA, which should at worst cancel out any ground game that Santos will bring. That’s enough for oddsmakers to offer MMA betting lines of as much as a -500 on Diaz, but the best price on the champ is a -340 line that can be found at Bovada.

If you think that Santos is capable of an upset victory the MMA betting lines will pay as much as +305 at Sports Interaction. Any upset that may occur would likely be the result of Cyborg landing a big shot during a stand-up portion of the fight. To think that he can beat Diaz on the ground is a stretch at best, so a bet on Santos is essentially a bet on the fight ending before regulation. This one looks like the smart money will on the champ to defend once again.

The other title fight on the Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg card will feature Ronaldo Souza (13-2-1) defending his Middleweight title for the first time. Souza has won all three fights he’s had with Strikeforce, mainly due to a vastly improved stand-up game that was once his weak point. He will try to defend against an MMA veteran in Robbie Lawler (20-6-1) and will be favored by as much as -312 to win.

The cheapest line on the champ that you can find is a -245 line at 5Dimes. Lawlor’s best payout is a +210 line at Sports Interaction. Lawler was once considered to be a top Middleweight but he’s lost two of his last four fights and looks in over his head against Souza.

Fight fans will also finally get another look at former football star Herschel Walker (1-0-0). It’s been almost a year since we watched him tear apart Greg Nagy and now he’s back to test himself against submission specialist Scott Carson (4-1-0). Look for Walker to walk through Carson and win a first or second round KO.
