Gray Maynard has fought Frank Edgar twice and not lost, yet he was unable to do enough to walk out of the Octagon with the UFC Lightweight strap on Saturday night. He was an MMA odds -140 favorite at to win his first title shot but the fight ended in a draw and the title stayed with the champion.
Frank Edgar, who was an MMA odds +125 underdog at 5Dimes, was not about to give up his title without a fight. After taking a heavy beating in the first round, Edgar showed everyone once again why he’s the UFC Lightweight champ by recovering and winning three of the remaining rounds to force the draw decision. Dana White has stated that the two will have a rematch as soon as they are ready to go again.
The big upset on the card was the first-round KO of Chris Leben at the hands of ex-Marine Brian Stann. Stann was a wrecking machine who dominated Leben from the first bell. His upset paid MMA odds of +155 at and we can expect to see Stann again soon and often when one considers his stand and bang style and marketability.
Thiago Silva showed everyone that his back surgery was a success as he dominated Brandon Vera for three rounds and a unanimous decision victory. Silva was a -155 favorite at 5Dimes going into the Octagon against Vera, and should have been more expensive when you consider how easily he dominated him.
Clay Guida ensured that he’ll be around the UFC for a while with a submission win over hard-hitting Takanori Gomi. Guida used his wrestling skills to wear down Gomi enough to lock in a guillotine choke and force the tap-out. The favored Guida paid out at -150.
Dong Hyun Kim continued his undefeated streak with a unanimous decision win over Nate Diaz. Kim paid -125 for the win and moved himself into the Welterweight title picture chanting “I want GSP” after the fight. Careful what you ask for, Mr. Kim.
