UFC Fight Night 22 Preview

MMA fans and bettors used to think Nate Marquardt was the next great middleweight and he gets to show that he can be that fighter this week.

The UFC travels to the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas for UFC Fight Night 22 this Wednesday night with a four-fight broadcast on Spike TV. The card will air before the season premiere of the 12th edition of the Ultimate Fighter: Team GSP vs. Team Koscheck with an interesting Middleweight main event fight between Nate “The Great” Marquardt (29-8-2) and Rousimar Palhares (11-2-0).

Before running into Chael Shonnen last February Nate “The Great” Marquardt (29-8-2) looked like a wrecking machine. He walked through top contenders Martin Kampmann, Wilson Gouveia, and Demian Maia with impressive KO wins and looked primed to get another shot at the UFC Middleweight championship. But after being dominated by Chael Sonnen last February, Marquardt finds himself back to the title-shot drawing board once again. He can get one step closer to another shot with a win on Wednesday night.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Rousimar Palhares’ only loss was to MMA legend Dan Henderson over two years ago. Marquardt will be his toughest test since Henderson, and a win on Wednesday will catapult Palhares into the group of title-shot worthy contenders. If Silva retains his belt against Sonnen again, Palhares would likely get the next title shot because Silva has already beaten all the other top Middleweight contenders. If he can’t beat Marquardt, his next opponent could be the other world-class jiu-jitsu black belt Damian Maia.

Palhares will have to take the fight to the ground to stand a chance against the pressure that Marquardt is going to bring in the Octagon. He will not be able to control Nate the Great while they’re standing, and any hopes of wearing down a cardio machine like Marquardt is a tall order for the best of strikers to achieve. That means Palhares’ best chance at a submission will come late in the fight, if he can survive the aggression he’s sure to face in the first couple of rounds.

Bookmakers at Bovada have Nate the Great as the heavy -240 favorite, while odds on a Palhares upset will pay +190. [ Get UFC Fight Night 22 odds and interesting prop bets from the shop that is known as the best in the business for MMA wagering and for bonuses - Bovada ]
