UFC Fight Night 23 Results
The big betting upset on the UFC Fight for the Troops 2 card turned out to be the main event. Highly touted Evan Dunham couldn’t handle the speed of the vastly improved Melvin Guillard, who paid out +200 at Bovada. In lightning fashion Guillard beat Dunham to the punch, and closed out the fight with knee kicks in less than three minutes of the first round.
After destroying Dunham (11-2-0), Guillard (27-8-2) called out the entire Lightweight division by saying that was the best in the world at the weight class. He also said he would go undefeated in 2011 and would get a UFC Lightweight title shot this year. As bold as those statements may have been there wasn’t a person in Fort Hood, Texas that didn’t believe that he would do just that. We’re looking forward to the lines that he’s going to get against some of the top-ranked fighters in the upcoming months.
Former Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights contestant Matt Mitrione (4-0-0) made believers out of many with an impressive thrashing of Canadian Tim Hague (12-5-0). Mitrione displayed excellent movement for a man his size and beat Hague to the punch at will. After dropping the Canadian slugger for the third time he swarmed him with ground strikes until the referee stepped in. As the -250 favorite Mitrione was more than safe money Saturday night.
With a UFC Featherweight title shot on the line -225 Bovada favorite Mark Hominick (20-8-0) had no trouble taking out George Roop (11-7-1) and ensuring his shot at Jose Aldo’s strap in April. Hominick landed a left hook that dropped Roop and then finished him with ground strikes only 1:28 into the first round.
The other Heavyweight fight on the UFC Fight Night 23 card had Pat Barry (18-6-1) matched up against the tough brawling Joey Beltran (12-5-0). Barry came into the fight as the -200 favorite at Sportsbook.ag and did not disappoint his fans with a unanimous decision win. Barry punished Beltran’s left leg and controlled most of the action for all three rounds.
