WEC 49 Varner vs Shalorus Preview

World Extreme Cagefighting goes international this weekend with their first event outside the USA, WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus at Rexall Place in Edmonton.

Headlining the event is a Lightweight bout between WEC Lightweight champion Jamie Varner and rising star Kamal Shalorus. Varner hasn't stepped into the cage since losing the Lightweight title at WEC 46 in January. It was Varner's third title defense, but he was unsuccessful after Ben Henderson forced him to submit to a guillotine choke. The loss snapped Verner's five-fight winning streak and dropped his lifetime MMA mark to 16-3.

Shalorus is undefeated at 6-0-1 in his young MMA career, with the only blemish on his resume being a draw against Mike Bronzoulis last year. In his last bout at WEC 46 he beat Dave Jansen by unanimous decision. That was Shalorus' first win by decision, as he had previously scored four knockouts and one win by submission.

Shalorus may be undefeated, but Varner is the former champion so he's the favorite this weekend at -175. Shalorus is a +145 underdog, but could well be worth a wager if he can nail Varner with some solid shots and keep his unbeaten streak going.

Aside from the main event, the fight Canadian MMA fans in Edmonton are waiting for this weekend is an all-Canadian battle between Canuck featherweights Mark Hominick and Yves Jabouin. This fight has been a long time coming, having been scrapped twice previously due to XMMA folding and an injury to Jabouin.

Both fighters have kickboxing backgrounds and the fight could be an all-out brawl because both combatants prefer to stay on their feet and throw. Oddsmakers have tabbed Hominick (17-8, 7 KO) as the fight favorite at -160, while Jabouin (14-5, 11 KO) is a +130 underdog.

One late change to the WEC 49 card was the subtraction of Ed Ratcliff from his scheduled fight against Chris Horodecki, due to injury. Horodecki will now face Dan Downes, and he's a big favorite at -500. Expect Horodecki to easily take down Downes, who has only had a few days to prepare for the bout.
