WEC 51 Betting Preview

It’s been over five months since Jose Aldo (17-1) defended his WEC Featherweight title against former champion Urijah Faber, and MMA fans have been patiently waiting to see him do it again.

That wait will be over this Thursday night when Aldo fights former Ultimate Fighter finalist Manny “Pitbull” Gamburyan (11-4) in Colorado. Aldo is considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world who can dominate a fight from any position. He’s beaten all the top Featherweights in the world and bookmakers have him as a huge -650 favorite to defend against his Armenian-American challenger.

Gamburyan has looked like an absolute beast at Featherweight, and is undefeated since dropping down from Lightweight. He has big power and will certainly have a puncher’s chance.

If Manny can connect, the upset pays a fat +450 at Bovada, and that’s a decent price, even against Aldo. The co-main event will pit Donald Cerrone (11-3) against Jamie Varner (16-3-1) in a Lightweight rematch. Their first fight was awarded to Varner because he was unable to continue due to suffering an illegal kick from Cerrone. The loss has haunted Cerrone and he will be very motivated to even the score on Thursday night. Varner still gets the nod on the books as the -180 favorite, while Cerrone will pay +150 at Bovada.

Both men have since lost to Ben Henderson and need this fight to remain relevant in the division. Also on the card will be the return of former Bantamweight champion Miguel Torres (36-3), who will be looking to get back on the title track with a win over veteran Charlie Valencia (12-5). The former champ will be coming off two straight losses and will likely destroy Valencia in early fashion.

Torres is the heavy -450 favorite while Valencia pays +350 for the upset at Bovada. MMA fans will also see the crowd-pleasing Chan Sung “The Korean Zombie” Jung (10-2) in action again, this time against George Roop (10-6-1). Jung is coming off a split-decision loss to Leonard Garcia that is a candidate for fight of the year. The Korean Zombie gets the nod against Roop as the -355 favorite, while Roop is worth +285 at Bovada.

Rounding out the main card will be another matchup that’s sure to produce fireworks when Leonard Garcia (14-5-1) takes on Canadian Mark Hominick (18-8). Despite beating Jung last time out, Garcia will be the +155 underdog to Hominick, who is favored at -185.
