5Dimes Opens Weidman vs Machida Odds

When Vitor Belfort withdrew from the UFC middleweight title shot against Chris Weidman, Lyoto Machida was quick to accept the title shot at UFC 173 on May 24.

And online sportsbook 5Dimes was just as quick to proclaim Weidman the -150 favorite against the former light heavyweight champion. The Weidman vs Machida odds opened Friday at +110 on the challenger.

Belfort withdrew the day after the Nevada Athletic Commission banned TRT (testosterone). He had an exemption to use TRT for ‘therapeutic use’ but this has come under heavy criticism as skeptics claim that form of use gives an unfair advantage to fighters. Its also controversial because therapeutic use is sometimes required by athletes who have used steroids in the past (Belfort was suspended in 2006 for failed drug tests).

Weidman gets plenty of respect from odds makers here even though the betting public and MMA fans in general still question him. Both of his wins over former middleweight champ Anderson Silva came amid unusual circumstances.

Silva clowned in the first fight and got knocked out. In the second, Silva broke his leg in the second round.

Machida has been on fire since dropping from 205 pounds to 185. He defeated Gegard Mousasi and Mark Munoz at middleweight and had won two of three at light heavyweight, including wins over Dan Henderson and Ryan Bader.
