Yanks battle Red Sox as underdogs

There are rivalries, there is bad blood, there are sports feuds. Then there is the Yankees and the Red Sox complete with playoff hatred and curses, with the Beantowners small favorites in the series kickoff tonight with young guns on the mound.

Baseball odds - New York Yankees (9-6) at Boston Red Sox (9-6) 7:10 PM ET

The MLB moneyline list at Bovada for this game shows the Red Sox are -122 favorites and the Yankees are +102 underdogs with a run total of Over/Under 9.5.

Tonight is the first match up between these two teams that love each other oh so much, being the biggest rivalry in all of sports.

After both these teams started slow out of the gate they are now tied for second place in the AL East. The Yankees have won three games in a row, but there is no hotter team in baseball then the Red Sox, who have won seven straight. {URL=}Matchup Report details with baseball betting trends {/URL}

Tonight’s pitching match up is between a couple of starters that are struggling. Joba Chamberlain (0-0 5.06 ERA) takes the mound for the Yankees and Jon Lester (1-2 5.50) takes the mound for the Red Sox.

Even though both pitchers have an ERA above 5, Lester is coming off a strong performance in his last outing going 7 innings and giving up 0 earned runs in a win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Chamberlain had a tough last outing only going 4 innings and giving up 5 earned runs in a no decision. He will face a Red Sox offense that is coming off scoring 17 runs in a double-header sweep of the Minnesota Twins. David Ortiz is on fire as of late being 5 for his last 12.

Speaking of struggling the Yankees entire pitching staff is doing just that, as they have given up 97 runs this year, which is the second worst in the AL East. The Yankees rank 11th in the AL in team ERA (6.02). At least the Yankees offense is playing well and their defense is leading the AL, as they have only committed six errors all year.

Since A-Rod is out with a hip injury the Yankees of Derek Jeter, Nick Swisher, and Melky Cabrera have provided the power for the Yankees, as they all have four home runs each.

This game will come down to pitching and which starter can have a solid outing.
