2018 NHL Entry Draft Betting Props

A general view of the Pittsburgh Penguins draft table is seen during the 2017 NHL Draft at United Center on June 24, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois.

Building through the draft has proven to be the most effective strategy toward constructing a successful hockey team, and the 2018 NHL Entry Draft at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas from June 22-23 could go a long way to solidifying the future of franchises throughout the league.

As of June 22 the Buffalo Sabres held the top selection in the draft, with the Carolina Hurricanes (2), Montreal Canadiens (3), Ottawa Senators (4), Arizona Coyotes (5), Detroit Red Wings (6), Vancouver Canucks (7), Chicago Blackhawks (8), New York Rangers (9) and Edmonton Oilers (10) shaping up the top 10 picks.

To get hockey bettors ready for the occasion, online shop BetOnline has released a litany of prop specials for the draft. Some of the most enticing props include odds on which player the Habs will select at No. 3, the player the Sens pick fourth overall, how many centers and defensemen get drafted in the first round, the number of Americans, Canadians and Russians taken as well as some junior hockey league-specific options.

Swedish phenom defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and talented Russian winger Andrei Svechnikov are widely expected to go to the Sabres and Hurricanes with the first two picks, but after that it’s wide open.

Who will the Canadiens choose?

It’s no secret the Canadiens are thin at the center position, so it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see the bleu, blanc et rouge take a skilled player down the middle at No. 3. Enter Finnish center Jesperi Kotkaniemi. According to Eric Engels of Sportsnet, the Canadiens are “locked in” on Kotkaniemi. The club’s opinion of the 17-year-old likely had a big influence on general manager Marc Bergevin’s decision to send 2012 third overall pick Alex Galchenyuk to the Arizona Coyotes for Max Domi. Unless something changes from now until the draft, Kotkaniemi’s price of +250 to go to Quebec is extremely enticing.

Are the Senators eyeing Zadina?

If Montreal decides to pass on winger Filip Zadina, the Senators are his most likely landing spot. Zadina, who’s the +200 favorite to go to the Senators, dazzled in his first year in North America with the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL, winning the Michael Bossy Trophy as the league’s best professional prospect. Ottawa has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent months, and the departure of Mike Hoffman leaves a hole on the wing. The Senators look like they’re headed for a downward spiral, but picking the Czech Republic native seems like the most sensible option here.
