Boxing: Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders Odds and Prediction

Canelo vs Saunders Betting Odds

The No. 3-ranked pound-for-pound boxer in the world, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, returns to the ring on Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 2 and will be taking on undefeated “Superb” Billy Joe Saunders. The fight is expected to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as a title unification fight as Saunders (+400) is defending his WBO super middleweight title and Alvarez (-700) his WBA super middleweight strap.

Odds Analysis

Getting the England native, Saunders, as an underdog should be intriguing to bettors as he hasn’t been a dog since his split-decision victory over Chris Eubank Jr. in 2014. Even in that bout, Superb was only a slight dog at +115. The undefeated boxer is making his third title defense, but this is by far his toughest test.

On the flip side, it’s no surprise to see Alvarez as a betting favorite as he has been just that in the majority of his fights, closing as an underdog only in his two fights against Gennady Golovkin (a win and a draw) and against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013 (his lone defeat). Most recently, Canelo made the jump to light heavyweight to take on Sergey Kovalev in November, closing out the show with an 11th-round knockout to win the WBO belt.

How Will This Fight Play Out?

The Mexico native, Alvarez, does a fantastic job of bullying opponents around the ring throughout the fight. The 29-year-old does this with tremendous footwork and in closing the distance he forces his opponents to throw punches that he counters powerfully and accurately. In punching exchanges, his great head movement allows him to avoid any major damage and when he’s throwing, he mixes up his punches from body to head, always keeping his opponents guessing.

The 30-year-old Saunders is very elusive with fast footwork that allows him to attack quickly and get out of danger swiftly. Additionally, he has a strong fight IQ, baiting opponents into throwing punches and countering quickly, and often times he will paw out a jab to get a reaction before sitting down on a power punch. However, when his opponents do decide to engage with him, he relies on bending at the waist or his quick feet to get out of danger, typically dropping his hands, and he doesn’t have a ton of head movement. He also lacks elite punching power, scoring just two finishes over the last seven bouts.

A pair of counterpunchers always makes for an intriguing bout. Saunders definitely has quicker feet and is good at getting on his bike to avoid onslaughts of combinations. That said, in the pocket, Canelo has much better head movement and power in his punches that he can take advantage of. Overall, I think Canelo is going to find opportunities where he corners Saunders and puts a beating on him in those exchanges, ultimately scoring a knockout late.
