Anthony Joshua vs Alexander Povetkin Betting Odds

Anthony Joshua defends his WBO, IBF, IBO and WBA heavyweight belts against challenger Alexander Povetkin on September 22 at Wembley Stadium in London. The current unified champion is a -1100 favorite with Povetkin coming back at +650. The fight will be live-streamed on DAZN and will take place around 5 p.m. ET.

A Look at the Champ

Joshua is a perfect 21-0 with 20 wins coming by way of TKO/KO in his professional career. The England native claimed the vacant WBA and IBO heavyweight titles when he finished Wladimir Klitschko in the 11th round of their 2017 bout. AJ claimed the WBO title by topping Joseph Parker in March by unanimous decision, his only victory by decision. The 28-year-old also earned an Olympic gold medal at the 2012 London Games.

Joshua is known for his extreme punching power, finishing 16 of his professional fights in three or fewer rounds. AJ was in negotiations to unify the four major heavyweight belts by clashing with Deontay Wilder but the conversations collapsed and Joshua will need to get past Povetkin if he wants that Wilder fight.

Povetkins Accolades

Povetkin has more experience than Joshua as he enters this bout with a 34-1 record with 24 wins coming by way of TKO/KO. The Russian’s lone loss came against Klitschko by unanimous decision in 2013. Similar to Joshua, Povetkin stood atop the podium at the Olympics, not at the 2012 Games but rather the 2004 Athens Games.

The 38-year-old was scheduled to be the mandatory challenger for Wilder’s WBC title but failed a drug test prior to that battle, and once again tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2017 before his fight with Bermane Stiverne. The Kursk native is riding an eight-fight winning streak, including a fifth-round KO of David Price on the undercard of the March 31 card that Joshua headlined with Parker.

Where is the Value for this Scrap?

At Sportsbook the reigning champ opened at -1600, which doesn’t provide much value for bettors. However, Joshua to win by KO, TKO or disqualification opened at -275 and with 20 of his 21 victories ending in that manner, that could offer a better payday. Another prop bet that could be worth a wager is whether this fight will go the distance and the “no” opened at -400.
