Boxing: Demetrius Andrade vs Artur Akavov Betting Odds and Prediction

Demetrius Andrade vs Artur Akavov Betting Odds

The WBO middleweight crown is on the line at the Hulu Theater in New York on Friday, January 18 as Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade makes his first title defense against Artur “Wolverine” Akavov. In addition to his title, Andrade is looking to defend his undefeated record and is a -5000 favorite to do so, while Akavov is eyeing his first major world title and is coming back at +1400.

Odds Analysis

The odds are par for the course for Demetrius Andrade as he had been favored by -1600 or more in each of his last five fights, though he was an underdog vs Billy Joe Saunders when they were supposed to fight in October before Saunders failed a drug test and was stripped of his WBO middleweight championship.

Meanwhile, there haven’t been many odds for Akavov but he was also an underdog (+703) against Saunders in a fight he lost via unanimous decision.

Demetrius Andrade vs Artur Akavov

Andrade (-5000) is an aggressive fighter with very powerful strikes for the middleweight division. Boo Boo is a composed fighter who doesn’t waste any extra energy by bouncing around, but rather slowly inches forward and uses his good head movement to avoid strikes when he enters punching range.

The 30-year-old rarely throws just one punch, nor does he use his jab to gauge distance that much. Typically he throws combinations leading with his right hand, followed by the power punch with his left hand that has led to 16 knockouts in his perfect 26-0 record. However, he has gone to the judges’ scorecards in each of his last three bouts.

Akavov (+1400) is once again challenging for the WBO middleweight championship after going the full 12 rounds with Billy Joe Saunders just over three years ago, losing by unanimous decision. Since then, Wolverine has rattled off three straight victories, including a first-round knockout of Jean Carlos Prada in March of last year.

The Russia native keeps his hands low and is very active, constantly pushing forward throwing hands. But he typically overextends on his punches and often throws just one punch at a time, seemingly not having the killer instinct when he has his opportunities. That being said, Akavov’s constant movement makes him difficult to hit and he’s never been knocked out in his career.

How will this fight play out?

I find that Akavov can often make his opponent miss on strikes but fails to follow it up with a flurry of punches and just sort of stands there expecting a shot to come back his way. Andrade is going to be the bigger man and I expect him to impose that height and reach advantage with solid combinations that will take the wind out of the Russian’s sails.

Boo Boo tends to sit down on his punches a little better and I think that will be the difference maker in this fight. If Wolverine doesn’t use his feet to get out of danger, he will be in deep trouble.
